ATIS stands for Automated Terminal Information Service which is a recorded message broadcast at most busy airports. ATIS gives pilots the current wind, air traffic, and runway information and local temperature, dew point and air pressure at the field and each time the information changes, the broadcast is revised, with each revision being assigned the next letter in the phonetic alphabet. This designation is included in the broadcast, which is identified as, "Information Alpha..." Bravo, Charlie, etc. At ATIS-equipped airports, pilots are required to listen to the recording prior to contacting Approach Control or the tower and must repeat the "Information so-and-so" identifier when they make their initial radio call.

A pilot on the ground preparing for a flight will want to receive an ATIS message from the ONLINE ATC station.
A pilot approaching an airport will want to receive an ATIS message from the ONLINE ATC station in order to make his landing plan. Therefore, an Air Traffic Controller is expected to prepare an efficient ATIS message meeting the expectation of pilots.

Knowing the constraints of servers, an Air Traffic Controller should prepare an ATIS message short enough so that unnecessary data transmissions are avoided in order to reduce the lag time.

ASRC 1.2 and VRC users shall not include any line relating to the voice server or voice room being used as this will be automatically added on line one of the ATIS by ASRC or VRC.

An ATIS message;

  • Shall not exceed four lines maximum (of which one is the voice server information)
  • Shall only contain relevant information as to the position being served.

Below find some ATIS messages satisfying the above conditions.

  2. THERE IS NO NEED TO WRITE THE FREQUENCY BEING USED AS THIS IS AUTOMATICALLY DIALED INTO WHEN CALLING THE ATC POSITION.
  3. ONE SHALL NOT ENTER THE NAME OR RATING OF THE PERSON PROVIDING ATC.
  4. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO ADD ANY OTHER NON RELEVANT INFORMATION
